If you have a tree stump in your Bowral, Mittagong, Moss Vale or Bundanoon backyard, the first question is usually the same one. What is this going to cost? The honest answer is that the price depends on a few things about the stump itself and where it sits, but every quote is set in advance from photos or a free on site inspection. No surprises on the invoice.
This guide breaks down what actually drives the price across the Southern Highlands, why grinding is almost always the right call against the alternatives, and what to expect when we come out to your property.
How a Professional Stump Grinder Works

A stump grinder is a self-propelled machine with a rotating wheel of carbide tipped teeth. The wheel is positioned over the stump and worked across the surface in passes, cutting 150 to 250mm below soil level on a standard residential job. The teeth chew the timber into mulch, which falls back into the cavity left behind.
Unlike full stump excavation, which involves digging the entire root ball out and hauling it off, grinding stays surgical. The stump and the major surface roots come out, the surrounding soil and turf stay where they are, and the area is left flat and ready to turf, mulch or plant over.
The cutter wheel does the work in a fraction of the time a person with a mattock could ever match. Most residential stumps take 30 minutes to 2 hours to grind, depending on the species, the diameter and the surface root structure. Hardwood species like ironbark and spotted gum take longer than softwoods because the timber is denser, which is why species matters in the price.
What Drives Stump Grinding Cost in the Southern Highlands

Every quote is per job. There is no flat per stump rate that sensibly applies across every property in the Highlands, because no two stumps are identical. The six factors I look at on every site visit:
1. Stump Diameter
This is the biggest single factor. A 300mm stump and a 900mm stump are not the same job. The bigger the stump, the more passes the cutter wheel needs and the more carbide tip wear we go through. Diameter is measured across the widest point at ground level.
2. Timber Species
Hardwood species, eucalyptus, ironbark, spotted gum, oak, take longer to grind than softwoods. The Southern Highlands has plenty of mature hardwoods because the cooler climate suits them. A 400mm spotted gum stump can take twice as long as a 400mm pine stump.
3. Number of Stumps
Grinding multiple stumps in one visit is cheaper per stump than separate jobs. The equipment is already on site, the travel is already accounted for, the setup is already done. If you have three or four stumps spread across the yard, getting them all done in one visit saves real money compared to phoning up three different operators.
4. Site Access
The grinders I run range from compact tight access units that fit through a 700mm gate up to wide self-propelled machines for open work. If the stump is in an open front yard with truck access, the bigger machine goes in and the job is fast. If it is in a tight back courtyard, behind a side gate, on a steep slope or between two retaining walls, a smaller machine has to go in and the job takes longer. Tight access work is part of what I specialise in across the Highlands.
5. Surface Root System
Some species send surface roots radiating out for metres. Liquidambar, willow, fig, large oaks. If the brief is to grind the stump AND chase out the surface roots so a path or new garden bed can go in, the job takes longer than if it is just the trunk that needs to go. We always discuss this on the quote, so you know what is included and what is not.
6. Travel from the Highlands Base
I operate across the Southern Highlands, the Illawarra and the Sutherland Shire from three local bases. Travel inside the Highlands, Bowral, Burradoo, Mittagong, Bundanoon, Moss Vale, Berrima, Robertson, Exeter, is local and built into the standard quote. Jobs further afield are quoted accordingly. The closer you are to the local base, the simpler the quote.
“Luke did a fantastic job removing a stump and some surface roots for us in Bowral. Great communication, very reasonable pricing and just a lovely guy to do business with. Thanks Luke!”

Why Grinding Beats the Alternatives
People often ask whether grinding is really the best option, or whether they should consider full excavation or chemical stump killer instead. Almost every time, grinding wins.
- Stump gone below ground in one visit
- Surrounding soil and turf undisturbed
- No tip fees, mulch left on site if you want it
- Regrowth eliminated by depth of cut
- Area ready to plant, turf or pave straight away
- Whole root ball dug out, big hole left behind
- Heavy machinery required
- Tip fees apply, root ball has to go somewhere
- Surrounding soil disturbed, turf damaged
- Useful only when the soil itself has to come out
- Takes 6 to 12 months to maybe work
- Often partial result, stump softens but stays
- Banned or restricted in some council areas
- Chemicals stay in the soil afterwards
- You still have to physically remove the softened stump
In almost every residential scenario across Bowral, Mittagong, Moss Vale and Bundanoon, grinding is the right answer. It is faster, cleaner, cheaper and the area is usable the same day. Full excavation only makes sense when the soil itself needs to come out, for example when the area is being prepared for a footing or a pool. Chemical stump killer is rarely worth the wait and the partial result.

Local Southern Highlands Notes
Soil in Bowral, Mittagong, Moss Vale and Bundanoon tends to be deeper and more loamy than the coastal Illawarra. Mature trees in the Highlands send roots down further because the topsoil supports it. The depth of cut we use, 150 to 250mm, sits well below the regrowth zone for hardwood and softwood species in this region, so we eliminate regrowth in one pass regardless of soil type.
Most Highlands properties are on larger blocks with mature established trees, eucalyptus, oaks, conifers, liquidambars, willows. These produce the bigger stumps in the price range, and they often come with extensive surface roots that homeowners want chased out as part of the job. That gets discussed on the quote so you know what is included.
Council vegetation rules vary across Wingecarribee. Most residential stump grinding is straightforward, no permits required, but if the tree being removed has a TPO or is on a council nature strip, separate approvals come first. We can talk you through what is and is not in scope on the inspection.
“Luke came to Bundanoon and attended to about 5 tree stumps that required stump removal. He was prompt, polite and courteous and did a wonderful job for a reasonable price. The offending stumps are now no more and we can start to plan our new garden. He left the site neater and better than it was before. I would highly recommend Luke and his business, Southside Stump Grinding.”
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does stump grinding take in the Southern Highlands?
Most residential stumps take 30 minutes to 2 hours to grind once we are on site. Hardwoods like spotted gum and ironbark take longer than softwoods because the timber is denser. Multi stump jobs in one visit run faster per stump than separate jobs because the setup is already done. If you have several stumps spread across the block, expect a half day on site at most.
Will the stump grow back after grinding?
No, not when the grind goes to 150 to 250mm below ground level across the full stump and the major surface roots are followed. That depth sits below the regrowth zone for hardwood and softwood species in the Highlands. The mulch left in the cavity stops sunlight reaching what is left of the root system underground. Regrowth after a proper grind is rare. The most common cause of regrowth is a shallow grind that leaves the root crown intact.
Do you take the mulch away or leave it on site?
Your call. The default is to leave the mulch on site, in the cavity left by the grind, where it slowly breaks down and improves the soil. Many homeowners use it as path mulch, garden bed top up or fill for low spots. If you prefer the mulch hauled away, I bring a trailer and tip everything at a licensed green waste facility. The choice is yours and it gets confirmed on the day.
Can you fit a grinder through a narrow side gate?
Yes. The compact tight access grinder fits through gates as narrow as 700mm and through standard pedestrian gates with the post removed temporarily. That covers most Bowral, Mittagong and Moss Vale heritage and federation blocks where the side access is constrained. If the gate is narrower than 700mm or there is no side access at all, we have hand carry options for the smallest jobs. Either way, we work it out on the inspection.
How do I get a quote for stump grinding in Bowral?
Two options. Send a photo of the stump with a tape measure laid across the widest point. We can quote from a clear photo in most cases and book the job in. Or call to arrange a free on site inspection within 24 hours. The inspection is short, 10 to 15 minutes, and you get a written fixed price quote on the spot. No call out fee. No obligation.
What is included in the quote?
Stump ground to 150 to 250mm below ground level across the full diameter. Major surface roots followed and ground out. Mulch left on site as fill in the cavity, or hauled away if you prefer. Site swept and tidied. All travel inside the Southern Highlands base radius. Anything outside that, for example wide root chasing past 1 metre, or pavers and structures that need protection above and beyond standard, gets called out on the quote so you know what is in and what is not.
“Luke did a great job removing about 10 stumps on our acreage in Mittagong. The job was done in less than 3 hours and he cleaned up after each one. Clear communication and showed up on time. Would highly recommend.”

How You Get Your Yard Back
Getting a stump out of a Highlands backyard does not have to be complicated. At Southside Stump Grinding we get the stump down properly the first time, with the right machine for the access, and we leave the area ready to turf or plant.
No pushy sales tactics. Luke comes around for a friendly look at the stump, walks through what the job involves, and gives you a straight fixed price quote on the spot. You decide whether you want to go ahead in your own time. People choose us because we tell them exactly what they are paying for and we do not cut corners on the depth of cut.
We walk you through what equipment we will use, how we will get it in and out of the yard, what depth we are grinding to, whether the mulch stays or goes, and how the site will be left. We will tell you why a 1 metre eucalyptus stump in heavy clay takes longer than a 400mm bay stump in a flat front yard, and we will flag anything we notice about access, structures or nearby plants that affects the job.
Our goal is straightforward. Stump gone, regrowth eliminated, area ready for whatever you are planning next, no damage to fences or pavers, and no surprises on the invoice.
Get in touch with us today. We will come out, look at the job, and give you a no obligation quote so you know exactly what to expect.
How We Work With You
Our process is straightforward and designed around your needs.
Step 1: We Talk and Answer Your Questions
When you get in touch, Luke will call you back or reach out to organise a time to come look at the stump. We explain who we are, how we work, and most importantly, exactly how the job will run on the day. We answer any questions you have about depth of cut, mulch, access, or the timing.
Step 2: We Quote on Site or from Photos
Send a clear photo with a tape measure across the widest point and we can quote from that in most cases. If the access is unusual or there are several stumps, Luke comes to the property and walks the job in 10 to 15 minutes. Quote is written, fixed price, no call out fee, no obligation.
Step 3: You Decide What Works Best
You take the quote and decide in your own time. If you want to go ahead, we book you in at a time that suits, often within the same week across the Highlands. If you want to get a second quote first, that is fine, we will not chase you.
Step 4: We Do the Job Properly
Crew arrives on the booked day, right grinder for the access, stump ground to depth, surface roots followed, mulch left on site or hauled away depending on what you chose. Site swept and tidied. We do not leave until you are happy with how it looks.
